Activity Details

Join local historian Dr. Dave Beine for a compelling bike ride along the Centennial Trail to the historic Horse Slaughter Camp near Stateline. In early September 1858, this site bore witness to a tragic event when Col. George Wright ordered the slaughter of over 800 Indian horses to “impress the Indians with our power.” This devastating act deeply disheartened the Indian people, leading to what they recall as the “winter of starvation,” during which many elders and young children tragically perished. As you sit by the tranquil banks of the Spokane River, Dr. Beine will bring this poignant history to life, sharing the stories of the past with thoughtfulness and depth.
